Welcome to Deconstructing Consent

We’re an independent commentary, analysis, and features journalism outlet focused on politics and culture, specifically on the ways they intersect with class, race, and gender. Consent from the governed is always necessary for those in power to rule.

In relatively free societies and times like our own, consent is more often manufactured through the influence of ideological apparatuses. These factories of ideological reproduction sadly include media outlets - which should challenge power on behalf of people, but instead all too often frame and report on issues and events in ways that service power.

On these digital pages we not only give unapologetic takes on current events, but also have meta discussions about media and conventional narratives in ways we hope encourage our visitors to become more critical readers of the information we all consume, and to understand why we think the way we do. We also serve up conversations with fascinating people who have interesting stories and perspectives.

The site is led by Elias Cepeda, a 15-year print and digital journalism veteran.

We have also launched a companion to the newsletter - The Deconstructing Consent Podcast.
