'This is a country plotting to assassinate a journalist because of what he has published'
Stella Moris discusses the plight of her husband Julian Assange
Julian Assange and the investigative website he founded, WikiLeaks, are collectively one of the most important journalistic forces for good of the past century. Assange and WikiLeaks have worked with courageous whistleblowers to uncover many war crimes committed by the United States.
None of those responsible for the atrocities revealed by Assange’s work have been held responsible. Instead, Assange has been kidnapped, tortured, imprisoned, and put on trial for shining light on the crimes of empire.
It has also been revealed that Assange and visitors of his have been illegally spied on and that the United States government plotted to assassinate him. Now, the same government that plotted to kill him for uncovering its crimes wants Assange extradited from the United Kingdom where he is being held and tortured to the United States.
Assange’s crimes are nothing more than journalism itself. His wife Stella Moris recently released a video with WikiLeaks summarizing the nightmarish scenario for not just Julian but also that which is unfolding worldwide, threatening journalism and free speech everywhere, forever more should Assange’s persecution continue.
“The U.S. and U.K. are happy to talk about political prisoners abroad, but they’ve created a political prisoner of their own,” Moris says.
Julian did nothing wrong. He exposed war crimes, war crimes committed by known individuals. Those responsible…have not been held accountable. Julian is in prison because Wikileaks is a publisher that specializes in the secrets that states keep the most hidden. Julian revealed war crimes by the U.S. government, the world’s superpower, in Iraq and Afghanistan and the fact that it had normalized institutionalized torture. And that superpower took revenge.
The position of the U.K. right now is that it will extradite a publisher to the country that conspired to murder him.
This is a country plotting to assassinate a journalist because of what he has published. This is precisely what the U.K. government criticizes in other states. Conspiring to murder a journalist is wrong. It’s wrong if Russia does it, and it’s wrong if the United States does it.
The United States government is the only one that has committed crimes here. Julian has done nothing wrong. By prosecuting Julian for doing the right thing they’re also denying the existence and the validity of what he exposed. Because the United States is not a member of the international criminal court, the only accountability that exists is the exposure through Wikileaks of the fact that these people were killed. So, by prosecuting Julian they’re not just prosecuting Julian, they’re putting the memory of all those people in prison, too.
